Meeting Roundup

Our February meeting was quite a ‘boozy’ one! We were visited by Clare Monk CEO & Founder of Welbeck Brewery Worksop, who produce hand crafted beers using their own natural spring water and hops combined to produce a unique flavour. Having completed her degree she was unsure what to do, and when Brewing was suggested she thought ‘oh I like beer, that sounds good!’ Clare continued to explain the brewing process and how their business has developed, She also explained the challenges she has faced as a woman in a predominantly man's world of work. Our members were able to taste a few selected beers and purchase some particularly for the men folk back home, some of whom had offered to dress up in a frock to enable them to join us!
Next meeting is Wednesday 5 March is the AGM & Social time. We will provide some savoury food, but those on the cake rota please still bring cake.
.
● NB: If anyone would like to join the committee prior to the vote please see Jan at the welcome desk, so that your name can be added to the ballot papers.
At the April meeting, to link with our planned craft activity, we will have a plant swap stall. If you have any unwanted house or outdoor plants, bring them along and exchange them for something different! Those allotmenteers among us may have a few too many seedlings - just label what you bring, and feel free to add a few tips about caring for the plant. Even unwanted seed packets can find a new home. And if your plant is too big to bring? Maybe it's still in the ground! Write a description and leave your name- maybe someone else would love that shrub that has got too large for your garden. Please transport your plants in containers which don't drip soil or muddy water through the building!

We had a lovely card from Jessops, thanking us for the blankets we gave to Louise.
We continue to look ahead to next winter’s Christmas markets and will continue to produce scarves, hats and fingerless mittens for sale. We have recently had a request from Mossbrook Special School in Norton, asking us if we could help to make some Christmas Chocolate Orange covers for their Christmas Fair in November. Please ask Jan or Gill for patterns for these.
Next meeting: Monday 3 March - 7.30 Robin Hood Pub Millhouses.
All Craft and Natter dates for 2025 are on the Events Calendar on the front page of The Forge website
Book Group
This month's book was Intermezzo by Sally Rooney. Many people found this to be a difficult read. It did have some good bits, but the story jumped a lot, went at a fast pace and was too descriptive in parts. Some people gave up early on and did not complete the book. Those that did fully read it found that the ending was too abrupt and the book too long. Scores ranged from 8 to 0 so an average score of 2.5/10. Definitely our worst scoring book to date!
Next meeting Wednesday 19 March 7.30 Laycocks - The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods.
Book Group meetings - 3rd Wednesday of the month, 7.30pm at Laycocks Sports Club. For full details see Upcoming Books
Social Events
On Thursday 20 February a group including our WI men folk visited Chesterfield Observatory. This was a re-scheduled visit from November when snow prevented the visit. We were all praying for good conditions, and were rewarded with clear skies. Through the big scope we were able to see Venus, Mars, and Orion's Nebula. Using the small scope outside we were able to see Venus and The Pleiades. Venus and the constellation Orion were also very clear to the naked eye and we were able to see many stars and constellations in the clear sky. We had a very informative talk on the planets and an explanation of the Great Alignment of Planets, which is due to be visible on Friday 28 February this year. This is when 7 of the 9 planets are in alignment in the sky, a very special event which will not happen again until 2040.
Curry Night - 26 February 7pm Everest (Indian restaurant) Meersbrook. A good first evening meal out was a set meal with lots of food available. We had a warm welcome and even a photo and details about The Forge on their Facebook page!
