Meeting Roundup

At last month’s meeting we were visited by 3 ladies from the Home Instead South Sheffield Team. The focus of this presentation was to help make us more dementia aware of both the symptoms and how to respond to people with different levels of dementia. Those of us

who have experienced relatives in this position could easily recognise how this can affect families and friends.

Next meeting: Wednesday 4 June. Brief introduction to Heeley City Farm followed by social activities provided by Gill & Shelagh.

Next Committee Meeting:

10 June 7.30 Laycocks Sports Club

Following the resignation of 2 committee members we are seeking to co-opt more members to the committee. We need 2, preferably more willing volunteers to join the committee to help us in the coming year and hopefully beyond.

This would entail attending and participating in committee meetings every couple of months, generally helping out and supporting our events when appropriate. This will help spread the load more evenly.

If you feel that you could give up a little of your time please speak to Shelagh or any member of the committee.

NB: If you intend to come to the June committee meeting please inform Jan, to

ensure that you are included in receiving the agenda prior to the meeting.

Craft Corner

Our changing venue of Friday afternoon Craft and Natter has proved most successful. We enjoy the calmer atmosphere in members' houses and are grateful to those who welcome us into their homes. We continue to meet alternate Mondays in The Robinhood pub at 7.30 pm.

This month we continue to work on our chosen charity projects and have more Trauma Bears, Baby blankets and Smoothie hats in progress. Jan is still making little characters to supplement the trauma bars for Sheffield family court.

NB: The closing date for Smoothy hats for The Big Knit is 1 July, therefore please can anyone knitting hats please get them to me by Saturday 21 June 2025.

Book Group

This month’s book was Go as a river by Shelley Read. The book was about a young girl in a small town in 1940s America telling of her life and struggles to overcome prejudice. Most people enjoyed this book, however one or two said that they struggled to fully

engage. The book scored 7.8.

  • NB - Books and jigsaw puzzle swaps are available at monthly meetings for a donation

    of £1.

  • Next meeting: Wednesday 18 June 7.30 Laycocks - The Poison Garden by LJ Ross

Book Group meetings - 3rd Wednesday of the month, 7.30pm at Laycocks Sports Club. For full details see Upcoming Books

Social Events

Sadly the May walk Shirebrook Shuffle with Steve had to be cancelled.

Social Events have grown so we have decided to give them their own space rather than overload the general monthly news roundup. These updates will be emailed as necessary.

In the meantime, be prepared and complete the online Social Events Declaration form that must be filled in by anyone wishing to take part in an event. The Declaration can be completed online (you'll find it on the members page), or alternatively it can be completed during a monthly meeting.

For future events see Upcoming Social Events book online or at the Social Events Desk

Charity

On Monday 12 May 4 members of the committee visited Heeley City Farm to meet Sarah Wilds, one of the 3 Female CEO’s. Sarah’s father was one of the founding members of the farm. We discussed how we could help support the farm during the coming year and were taken on a guided tour of the farm to see the many aspects of the work that goes on.

ree

Sarah will be coming to our next meeting to give a short presentation on the work of the

farm. We have agreed to have a stall at their summer event on Saturday 21 June where

we will be selling the usual baked goods, also books/jigsaws.

If you are willing to bake, or have any books/jigsaws to donate please contact Jan, Carolyn or Sue to arrange drop off prior to the event. If you can offer to man the stall for a while or help to set up please let a member of the committee know asap.

Have your say

If you have any thoughts or ideas you'd like to share or suggest please use the Contact Us form so we can follow it up.
