Roundup

In July we had a talk by Steve, who conducts our guided walks around Sheffield. He told us of the life and times of Mary Queen of Scots who was incarcerated in Sheffield Castle, Manor Lodge and various other places around the Derbyshire area. This was in preparation for our next guided tour of Manor Lodge & Norfolk Heritage Trail.

August - no meeting

Craft Corner

We have had two requests for help. Lou is a member who works at Jessops and from time to time makes requests on behalf of the hospital. We have been asked to knit blankets of minimum size 50cm X 50cm. If you or someone you know could help please contact Jan or Carolyn. Jan has our donated yarn, so if you need suitable yarn please let Jan know. Another request is from High Storrs School for knitted or crocheted poppies needed by October for a display in November.

Book Group

July’s book was The Defence by Steve Cavanagh. We thought that the story line was too far-fetched. James Bond and Die Hard came to mind and we came to the conclusion it would have been better as a film. It scored 6/10. His other books are honestly better.

Next books

August - A three dog problem by SJ Bennett

September - Sleepyhead by Mark Billinham

October - Frenchman's Creek by Daphne DuMaurier

November - The Thread by Victoria Hislop

December - The murder game by Tom Hindle

Outing

July’s outing was very local, a tour of Bishops House at Norton Lees, a lovely example of a small country house the oldest part of which has been accurately dated to 1554. Our tour guide was able to tell us a lot about the history of the house, the Blythe family that owned and farmed the land from 1377 to c1735 and its history until the present day. The house is a volunteer-run museum which is open at weekends.
